The super-easy bagged potato project
• Potatoes are a perfect vegetable crop to grow in containers—in fact, in some ways they are even easier to grow in containers than in the ground. And if thinking "potato" doesn't make your mouth water, chances are you've never tasted the difference between store-bought and fresh-from-the-garden potatoes.
Watering
Pots and containers always require more frequent watering than plants in the ground. As the season progresses and your plants mature, their root system will expand and require even more water. Don't wait until you see the plants wilting. Check your containers daily to judge the need for water.
Harvesting
When flowers start to pop up on your potato plants, you can pull out a few "new" potatoes by rooting gently around in the soil with your fingers. Or harvest the whole lot anytime, before the plants start to turn yellow. Harvesting is easy: Just tip over the bag onto a sheet of plastic and pick out the fruits of your labor (no digging required). If you have space, you may want to start a new bag every few weeks from very early spring through early summer, to extend your harvest.
Tips:
· Potatoes – Chit tubers (to produce sturdy shoots) in a cool light place before planting to encourage quicker establishment and growth.
· Where to grow potatoes – All potatoes do best grown in a light, warm sunny spot.
· Soil / Compost – use a good proprietary compost or an equal mix of compost and soil and place a layer 4-6 inches in the bottom. Place potatoes on compost and cover with a further 4-6 inches of compost.
· Earthing Up Potatoes – Potatoes grow from the stem beneath the surface. So keep covering the foliage with more compost as it grows until the sacks are full to within 4 inches of the top.
· Feeding and Irrigation – This really is the big the secret. Mix potato fertiliser or a good general purpose fertiliser with the compost during planting and earthing up. Keep compost consistently moist (but not over wet) and you will reap dividends for your crop.
What else can you grow in a bag?
Growing bags are ideal for plants that don't have deep roots, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, chilli peppers, aubergines and courgettes. Plant two to three plants in each bag during spring. Alternatively, cut a long panel in the top of the bag and sow salads in rows. Endive, lettuce, basil and rocket can be sown from spring to late summer.
